Our Mission:

To explore, preserve and celebrate the history and cultural landscape of the town of Georgetown, by presenting community and educational programs, encouraging architectural preservation, operating a museum and library, and producing publications

GHS, founded in 1975, is an IRS tax-exempt, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the State of Maine. About half our 540 memberships are families that live in Maine and half are from Georgetown's diaspora scattered throughout the United States with a concentration in New England. GHS operates with about 75 volunteer members engaged in the management and presentation of our activities.

GHS library and museum – and its growing collection of documents, books, maps, photographs, and artifacts – are presently housed in a temporary and inadequate rented GHS headquarters building of 600 sq. ft. (a former Georgetown post office). Some artifacts remain in an 1830 one-room stone schoolhouse owned by the Town. The temporary headquarters is staffed and open to the public once a week in winter and three days a week in summer, or upon request. The GHS community and educational programs are largely undertaken in other temporary quarters in Georgetown, rented for each occasion. We look forward to moving into our permanent headquarters in June of 2007
