Girls Incorporated of Washington County
Girls Incorporated of Washington County is a national, not for profit organization noted for its widely acclaimed informal education programs that have been developed through extensive research and evaluation. We have been serving the needs of girls in the West End of Hagerstown for fifty-seven years. We provide after school, evening and weekend programs for girls' 5-18 years old.
Many of the girls we serve are from low socioeconomic, dysfunctional, single parent families where alcohol and drugs are abused. Many of our girls do poorly in academics and are below grade level.
Girls Inc. is a place where talents are discovered, values are set, self-esteem is developed, growing pains are a little less intense, lifelong friendships are formed and the girls find a brighter, stronger future.
We are not a recreational after school program to keep girls off the street. We are keeping girls safe when they might otherwise be victims or perpetrators of crime. We are helping girls get better grades and stay in school. We are providing working parents with the security of knowing their children are engaged in safe, educational and constructive activities. Our mission is to empower all girls to become self-sufficient, responsible and confident women.
We serve an average of 135 girls a day, a total of 1028 different girls a year with our outreach programs. Girls' come to the center after school and stay until 8:00 pm. On Saturdays we are also open for sport activities. They eat supper at the center every evening and the staff and volunteers help them with their homework. The cost to become a member is $5.00 a month.
Today, we provide girl-focused programming and advocacy to help girls grow up "strong, smart and bold." Regardless of the subject matter, our programs are designed to foster girls' self-awareness and healthy development.
The environment and programs at Girls Inc. foster girls' self-confidence and encourage girls to take risks. We create time, space and programs where each girl is taken seriously for who she is and who she will become. We create an environment for girls where similarities and differences between girls are valued, respected and celebrated. Girls Incorporated provides an ideal environment for the development of self-reliance and life skills
