Gloria Dei Lutheran Church

Our History

Gloria Dei was the answer to the prayers of many in the Central Point area when the results of a survey by Mr. Stocker of the Mission Board of the Northwest District, Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, recommended the congregation be formed.  From February 1964 to June 1966, the congregation met in the gym of Central Point Elementary School.  Ground breaking at the current site was held on July 11, 1965.

K. Walter Johnson of Tacoma, Washington, was the architect and Olson Construction of Canyonville, Oregon, was the contractor. Many hours of labor from the congregation were given to assist the contractor in completion of the edifice.

Since the building was finished, the building and grounds have undergone a few major changes.  The roofline was reconstructed, the landscaping was redesigned, the communion rail was moved to a lower level making it easier for several to receive communion, and new windows and siding were installed.

Gloria Dei has experienced many changes in membership and activities during its 40 plus years of life.  Seven of the original 24 founding families remain in the congregation, while new members from the fast-growing community join each year.  Traditional forms and customs are part of the ministry that includes new hymnals and worship styles, as well as renewed emphasis on Bible study and outreach.

The people of Gloria Dei are moving to embrace the challenges that God is presenting.  As we praise our Lord for His blessings in the past, we seek to be open to the gifts, resources, and guidance provided by His Spirit.  We are growing in awareness of great opportunities to witness and serve.  With God's help, we continue to increase in our willingness to be "God's people using God's gift to God's will."
