Our church was erected in 1839 and Reverend John Coons was the first pastor. In 1841 he was elected Bishop. It was said of him, "He was a good preacher of good ability, but was distinguished especially for his good judgment and responsible character."
In all of this history, since 1839, it has seemed to be more material accomplishments than spiritual, but these material things came because the people had a mind to work. We have had some wonderful revivals with great evangelists, Dr. Dewey Whitwell, Vineroff, Dr. James Deweerd, Rev. Helm, Rev. Barnell, J. R. MacMurray, Dr. O. E. Williams, Dr. Harold Lyman, Rev. Robert Miller and Rev. Emmitt Eccard. Some of our very early pastors became Bishops and Presiding Elders. Many from our church have gone into the ministry such as Robert Gehres, Orin Baker, Ernest Seymour, Ewing Ross, Fred Brown, David Thomas, Branson Hawkes, Richard Thomas, Robert Thomas, Dan Pohl, Brian Meadows and Scott Watters. Those who have gone as Missionaries are Ruth Yocom, and Sharon and Wayne Hatfield.
We need to continue to put Christ FIRST in our lives. As Mrs. Ralph Long concluded her article in 1920, "May God still continue to bless us and may we be willing and ready to do our part in the great program of saving souls."
