Grace Church, Lockport was first organized in the year 1829, but this
organization lapsed and its records were lost. The second orgizantional meeting
was held February 3, 1835. On February 9, 1835 The Rev. Orange Clark, rector of
Christ Church signed the necessary legal documents to become said Church. The
first Rector was Rev. George Denison.
The Congregation built its first Church at the corner of Buffalo
and Saxton Streets and the first services were held there on February 18, 1838.
A much larger edifice, at the corner of Genesee and Cottage, was dedicated in
August, 1855. In 1885 a rectory was purchased, and in 1886-87 a Parish House was
built on land adjacent to the Church.
During the second fifty years the Church was served by two
outstanding rectors, The Rev. William F. Faber and Dr. Henry F. Zwicker. These
were years of missionary expansion as several Missions were established in the
outlying parts of the city and the surrounding countryside. Music became an
important part of the Church's worship and a series of memorial windows were
placed in the nave.
During the third fifty years the Church interior was renovated,
the outside repainted and the Parish House remodeled. On February 2, 1975 the
Church and second floor of the Parish House were destroyed by fire. Only the
stone walls and the towers were left standing. The congregation voted to remain
in the inner city and reconstruction began in April 1976. Our present house of
worship was rededicated on Sunday, May 22, 1977.
Upon the rebuilding of the Church after the fire and
rededication, The Rev. Russell Foster retired after 30 years of service in June
1977.
July 1978 The Rev. John Gibson Jr. became the 13th Rector of
Grace Church. In May 1984 he resigned to become Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal
Church in Edenton, NC.
In September of 1985, during the 150th celebration of the
founding of the Parish, The Rev. William J. Lawson was inducted as the 14th
rector of Grace Church until 1988. During his Rectorship a 64 Niche Columbarium
was installed in the Southwest section of the Church.
In 1990 The Rev. James S. Massie, Jr. became the 15th rector. The
congregation had lost membership, especially among young families. For the next
eight years, the congregation added new parishioners, several with young
children. The financial affairs of the church were consolidated and put in a
more stable order. The music program was enhanced with the addition of Choral
Scholars. A Sunday evening Bible-Study for adults was added to the Christian
Education program.
In August 1992, Grace formed a mutual arrangement with St. John's
Parish in Wilson, NY, some ten miles northwest of Lockport. The Rev. Evelyn
Manzella doubled as Rector to St. John's and Curate at Grace until she resigned
in 1994 to accept a post in New England.
During this period, major interior and exterior repairs to the
property were completed. Grace's Rector was also very involved in community
life. During his tenure the Cross Walk on Good Friday was organized for the
community. The congregation was saddened when in January 1998 he announced his
forthcomming retirement.
Our next Rector was the Rev. David Brower who came in July of
2000. He resigned in 2004. Our interim Rector is the Rev. Robert J.
Hill.
