History :
Greenwood Township was created by an act of the State Legislature February 12, 1855. Prior to that date the area
was part of Brockway Township.
Because there were no navigable streams nearby, Greenwood was settled later than most of St. Clair County.
Since the township was heavily wooded after the surrounding areas had been lumbered off, it was name
Greenwood.
The Township developed quickly in its first 25 years. Although there were no residents in 1840, by 1864 the
Township had a population of 625 and had two small post office villages - Greenwood Center and East Greenwood. In 1881 the Hartsuff Post Office opened. Hartsuff, also known as Green's Corners, was a fast
growing village of about 100 people with a general store, sawmills, blacksmith and barber. Hartsuff was named
for the three Hartsuff brothers, George, William and Dr. Albert Hartsuff. All three brothers served in the Civil
War and all three attained the rank of General.
The unincorporated Village of Fargo was first settled by Charles Farr. In 1857 he and Henry Hull built a school and established a school district. A Post Office was established with Mr. Farr appointed as Postmaster. In 1882 the Village of Fargo was platted and is today the only platted land in Greenwood Township. Hartsuff, East Greenwood and Greenwood Center no longer exist.
