About Us:
On many summer evenings the Amphitheater at Hard Bargain Farm shoots light beyond branch and leaf. Under this canopy of oak trees, local music and theater come alive, and after a brief stroll down a lit path, the best-kept secret in central Maryland reveals itself. Built in the early 1930s by Alice and Henry Ferguson, the original stage was merely a half-circle of concrete set in a natural amphitheater in the woods of their Hard Bargain Farm. For many years the Fergusons used the amphitheater as a place to gather with their friends and neighbors on summer evenings. They would entertain themselves by dressing up in elaborate costumes and putting on amateur plays. It became a Hard Bargain tradition.
The Hard Bargain Players (HBP) is an all-volunteer theatre troupe, which strives to bring diverse and vibrant arts to Prince George’s County and to Central and Southern Maryland. The Players performance space, the Amphitheater at Hard Bargain Farm, is a unique naturally occurring amphitheater that impresses scores of arts patrons each year. Our mission is to bring theater arts to the citizens of Prince George’s County and to Central and Southern Maryland, and to produce works by diverse playwrights; we are devoted to providing inexpensive, educational, and uplifting artistic experiences that reflect and invigorate the community's cultural identity.
The Hard Bargain Players is comprised of a vibrant group of performers who have only begun spreading their fine art to the community. HBP produces and performs four to eight full-length productions each year, in addition to sponsoring special events including but not limited to play reading circles, reader’s theatre, and children’s theatre workshops. We strive to sponsor various theatrical workshops on directing, acting, and playwriting throughout the year for interested members of the local theater community.
