The Illinois General Assembly is the legislative power of Illinois, made up of two chambers - the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The principal function of both chambers is to enact the laws of our state, determine the state budget and consider proposed amendments to the Illinois and United States Constitutions.
The Illinois Senate is a 59-member body, elected to two-year and four-year terms, staggered over a 10-year period. Currently 27 members are Republicans, 31 members are Democrats, and one was elected Independent.
The Senate currently has committees, which concentrate on specific subject areas such as education, agriculture and transportation.
Before becoming law, each bill must pass both chambers and be signed by the Governor.
