I am proud to be a part of the newest school in the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation. What makes J. B. Stephens Elementary School special is not only the fantastic facility, but the people who inhabit it. Our teaching staff is made up of 39 full time teachers, four part time, and numerous specialists.
Our building has been arranged in wings, with the media center in the middle of it all. We house a preschool, which is a part of the Hancock-South Madison Special Education Cooperative, six sections of kindergarten, five sections of grades one, two, and three, four sections of grades four and five, and two sections of K-2 cross-categorical special education classes.
Our curriculum is based on the Indiana standards and includes Saxon phonics at kindergarten and first grade. Our students participate in the Accelerated Reader computerized reading comprehension program. Other computer programs include All the Right Type and Wild West Math. Our first through fifth grade students receive instruction by trained educators in art, music, and physical education weekly. All students visit the library weekly.
Our services include all aspects of special education and a social work program. We have a parent lending library with various academic and social resources. A support group for children with special needs, F.U.S.E., also provides a lending library of resources for any of the corporation’s families. Our extra-curricular activities include basketball, student council, an honor choir, and Spell Bowl and MATH teams, and Math Pentathlon Clubs for interested first and second graders.
