About K/T AAA - HICAP
The Kings/Tulare Area Agency on Aging Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) is a volunteer based program that provides unbiased information to help with making the best choices concerning Medicare. HICAP was created because the legislature knew that seniors needed help with understanding Medicare, and needed unbiased counseling with regard to their supplemental insurance choices.
HICAP has been charged since 1988 to provide unbiased information and counseling for Medicare recipients and their families. We also help pre senior, seniors, caregivers and adults with disabilities learn more about their rights within the Medicare system. HICAP is supported by Federal and State Funds which are administered by the California Department of Aging.
HICAP services are free, and counselors do not sell, recommend, or endorse any insurance product, agent, insurance company, or health plan. HICAP can provide individual counseling to Medicare recipients in Kings and Tulare counties. Counselors receive intensive and ongoing training before being registered by the State. Counselors help people with health insurance, prescription drug resources, long term care insurance, and rights and protections of Medicare consumers.
As part of HICAP services, we also provide community education and forums to the public and help educate healthcare providers to ensure they have a better understanding of the Medicare system.
HICAP is currently in need of volunteers who are willing to become State registered Medicare counselors. Candidates must be computer and internet competent. Training begins February 19th thru March 12th and will be held at our Visalia HICAP office. Once the initial 40-hour training is completed, candidates must complete a 10-hour internship, attend monthly meetings, and be willing to commit at least 4 hours per month within their communities. If this sounds like something you would enjoy and would like to explore further, please call Ashli Cole at 559-623-0199 to discuss this amazing opportunity to help your community.
