HISTORY OF THE LEELANAU PLAYERS
1976 - 2006
The Leelanau Players came into being after a Bi-Centennial Review was staged in 1976 by a group of ambitious thespians. Receiving enthusiastic approval, the group decided to organize into a permanent troupe, dedicated to presenting live theatre in Leelanau County.
For the following twenty-some years The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay was the venue for many plays and musical productions, and is still our primary "home." However, more recently we have branched out to other venues, as in 2002 we presented "Great Expectations" and in 2005 "The Boy Friend" at the beautiful Northport Community Arts Center, and also an evening of readings & dinner theatre - "A Literary Feast" and "Talking With" in 2004 and "Out To Sea" in 2005 - at Hattie's in Suttons Bay.
In most recent years, the Players have brought to the stage "Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding" in 1999," Holiday Memories" in 2000, "The Cemetery Club" in 2001, "Great Expectations" & "A Literary Feast" in 2002, "Die Like a Dog in the Middle of the Road" in 2003, "Talking With" and "Our Town" in 2004. In 2005, we presented the musical "The Boy Friend" and dinner theater "Out to Sea", and in 2006, "A Stone That Rises" by local author Anne Marie Oomen. We look forward to our upcoming dinner theater production of "Three Tables" in December 2006.
