About Us
Maxwell Hill Elementary is located in the middle of Maxwell Hill neighborhood, a section of the city of Beckley. It has been identified as a School of Excellence since the year of 2001 and is also identified as an Exemplary School since 2001. Those awards have been presented by the West Virginia Department of Education. To be considered for those awards, the school has to have a high attendance rate, high achievement scores, and --Maxwell hill Elementary School generally has some of the highest achievement test in the county.
In the school, there are grades from K-5. There are two classes for every grade with a unique teacher of its own. The school has a population of 225 students. The school has a counselor, speech therapist, Special Education teacher, gifted teacher, physical education teacher, music teacher, two teachers' aides, and 12 regular education teachers
The school has a huge gymnasium and a music room that have the experts in disguise for teachers! In physical education class, students use pedometers to record how many steps they take in 20 minutes. The gym teacher usually has goals for students to reach a certain number of steps. Students also lay soccer, kickball, volleyball, and basketball. Special programs include learning how to shag dance. In the music, students have the opportunity to participate in a choral program. Students are selected to join the All County Chorus, a special music program held each April.
Special programs include the Green Team (a group that is in charge of the recycling program at school) and the 4-H Club (to boost student's imagination and to serve the community), Cub Scouts for boys and Girl Scouts. There is also a YMCA after school program for students who need a place to go before parents arrive to go before parents arrive to pick them up to go home. Students can complete homework, play outside, and generally have a good time with a great place to stay until p.m.
The school has a basketball team, a volleyball team, and a cheerleading squad. Students (boys and girls) may try out for the basketball team, but only girls may tryout for the volleyball team and cheerleading squad.
The students at Maxwell Hill School are expected to do the best they can and the teachers always try to make Maxwell Hill the best learning place in the nation!
