Melrose Elementary School

1641 Sunset Lane
330-345-6434

Melrose School opened its doors in January, 1963 with just grades 5 and 6, which were pulled from another school. In the fall of 1963, Melrose's first principal, Mr. Rudy Rice, welcomed students in grades K-6. At that time, Melrose was one-third smaller than it is today. Since 1963, the school has had two additions. The first in 1979, extended the north end of the building, which allowed us to have a specially built over-sized kindergarten room with lower closets, Mrs. Hawke's resource room, both first grades, and the restrooms. The second addition, in 1990, extended the school to the south, which gave us our art and music room and Mrs. Adams' resource room. There have been only four principals during the 40 years of Melrose's existence, with Mr. John Moritz, present principal, serving 26 of those years.
In 1990, Melrose School earned a special designation from OAESA (The Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators) as a Hall of Fame School after having shown excellence in a wide variety of areas. Melrose became an inclusion school soon after, allowing all children to be taught in the least restrictive environment. As a result, our special education teachers work in the classroom with the classroom teachers, benefiting all students. Currently, Melrose has 35 staff members and about 280 students.
