About the Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church in the United States of America (ECUSA) dates from the years following the Revolutionary War. It was then that Church of England congregations gathered into an independent denomination. Because the word Episcopal means, "having bishops," members called themselves Episcopalians, pointing to the historic ministry of bishops, priests and deacons.
The Episcopal Church and other 29 other worldwide national churches make up the Anglican Communion. The combined membership of 70 million members comprises the world’s third largest Christian body.
