Millard Hawk Primary is a building for pre-kindergarten through grade 2 students with an enrollment of about 435. In addition to quality instruction, we offer a Universal Pre-K for the district's children and a YMCA before-school and after-school child-care program.
Millard Hawk Primary School opened in September 1993. For many years prior to that time our school was a junior high. As a result of over-crowding, the district decided to build a new middle school, and then had to consider how to restructure Millard Hawk and its sister school, Central Square Elementary. To do this, a team of administrators, teachers, and parents visited primary and intermediate schools in other districts. This group's job in 1988 was to recommend to the Board of Education whether we should have two Kindergarten through grade 5 buildings on the same campus or have separate primary and intermediate schools. The committee recommended that we create a primary school and an intermediate school and the Board of Education approved the plan.
Central Square's five elementary schools were redistricted for the 1993-1994 school year, following the opening of Central Square Middle School in January 1993. The redistricting process brought to Millard Hawk, new families, staff members, supplies, books, furniture, and equipment from the other elementary schools in the district. This redistribution of students in the district eased enrollment concerns in all elementary buildings. It also brought many challenges to the Millard Hawk Primary School staff as we sought to get acquainted with each other and the new group of families. The Millard Hawk faculty, staff and community met each challenge and came together as a family. We continue to eagerly face the challenge of each new year.
