ABOUT THE MONROE COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

The Monroe County Historical Association was formed in 1990 by the merger of the Monroe County Historical Society and Monroe County Museum Association. The organization retains the charter of the Monroe County Historical Society.

The Monroe County Historical Society was founded in 1921 by Dr. Mary Erdman and other leading citizens. The museum and the research library are located in the historic Stroud Mansion, constructed in 1795 by Jacob Stroud and occupied for many years by his descendants.

In 1920, the building was purchased by the Stroudsburg Civic Club, which formally incorporated the structure as “The Stroud Community House” on Jan. 22, 1922.

In 1994, the Monroe County Historical Association received control of the Stroud Mansion from the Stroud Community House Board of Trustees.

The Monroe County Museum Association was incorporated in 1976. After temporary locations, the collections were housed permanently in the 1883 freight station of the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad. In 1981, the building – the Driebe Freight Station – was moved to its present location on Ann Street in Stroudsburg.

The mission of the Monroe County Historical Association is to promote, protect and preserve the rich history of Monroe County.
The goals of the MCHA are to:

• Promote and encourage historical research and study

• Collect and preserve archival materials

• Collect and preserve historical artifacts

• Develop and present educational opportunities to all age groups, including on-site and outreach programs.
