Missions
Without preachers or leadership, Churches of Christ in North East New Mexico are facing a crisis. Dwindling numbers have forced members to shutter buildings where the church once thrived. Churches in Taos, Springer, Raton, Cimmaron and other smaller communities are suffering similar fates.
This website page is designed to alert other Christians to the dangers of the failure of providing support for these communities. There is truly a mission field in the back yard of many prospering churches. Efforts are being made to gather pictures and history of works in this area, which were started by pioneer men who have since passed and left this fertile field unattended.
History
The church had its first meeting on the first Sunday in November, 1975 . For the next ten years it met at the Veterans Memorial and other locations as they were available. In 1985 2.388 acres of land was purchased just outside the village of Eagle Nest on the highway leading to Angel Fire. In July 1986 the lots were paid off after five months by contributions from visitors, other churches and individuals and the planning and construction of a meeting place began.
Construction on the new building was completed and an open house was held September 6, 1986. The attendance was 245 for that Sunday. A mortgage burning was held in November of 1990. Although the bank was paid in full, the church did not obtain a clear title until December 2016.
Since 1990 the growth of the congregation has experienced ups and downs depending largely on the economy and the number of summer visitors mostly from Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
In 2013 a youth program was instituted and attendance increased by about 40. In the past 4 years there has been 15 baptisms, all but one resulted from the newly instituted youth program.
