Mt. Zion United Brethren Church
Mt. Zion History:
Mt. Zion United Brethren Church was built in 1870 on one half acre of land owned by T.J. and Anna Vosburg.
On January 14, 1871, the land was purchased from Mr. Vosburg for $10.00 and a deed made out to the trustees to be held as long as the land was used for church purposes.
This deed was made in the presence of Joseph Bisbee and Samuel Musser. Mrs. Vosburg declared her willingness to sell the parcel of ground.
On October 13, 1897 (the surrounding of land having been sold in the meantime to Henry and Maragretta Adams) the reverting clause was removed by deeding the lot to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Adams for the sum of $1.00 and they in turn deeded it back to the named trustees for their successors in office and assigned forever.
The trustees at that time were: J.A. Ferguson, William Musseer, C.J. Updegraph, Fred Bomer and K.K. Soule.
The church was built with two front doors. The men entered by the west door and the women by the east door. This custom held until about 1920.
Revival meetings were long and fruitful. Some lasted fourteen weeks. Everyone in the community was converted except two families.
The church was on the Bloomdale Circuit until 1902 when it was placed onto the Jerry City Curcuit where it remained until 1950 at which time it became a station.
The room to the east of the sanctuary was built in 1935.
On May 22, 1954 the church was mortgaged for $8,000.00 and remodeled. It was moved back from the road. A basement, furnace and new flooring were added. The mortgage was paid in full November 20, 1961.
In 1963 a half acre of land was purchased on the northwest corder of Bays and Reynolds Road for the building of a new parsonage. The parsonage was ready for occupancy in January 1964.
In 1968 the following were added to the church building: aluminum siding, restrooms, storage room, carpeting, pews and pulpit furniture.
In 1975 an addition, 35' x 55', was built to enlarge the sanctuary, provide the pastor's office, a coat room and the basement area for a fellowship room and kitchen. The cost was $93,000. The mortgage was paid off in 1984.
In October of 1998 construction of the Family Life Center began and was completed in September of 1999. The cost was $795,000. The Family Life Center (FLC) was built to provide more sunday school rooms, a larger fellowship area, an adequate lobby, an access to the sanctuary for the phsically challenged and additional restroom facilities. The FLC was dedicated October 3, 1999.
