Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church has been a source of Christian faith for almost 175 years. Ten men and women and four ministers gathered on October 21, 1826 to found the Shelbyville Baptist Church, later called Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, the first Baptist Church in Shelby County. The church grew out of its original log house to a new frame church built in 1854. The church was moved to the location in the old cemetery in 1864.
The church continued to grow, moving from a quarter time minister to a half time minister by 1866. The Sunday School was established in 1863. A major building and renovation project began in 1946 when the church was moved to its present site and remodeled, adding a basement and masonry. A parsonage was completed by 1954, and the church was able to support a full time minister by 1957.
The educational wing was completed in 1967, providing classroom space for the growing Sunday School. The steeple was added in 1981 in memory of Stephen Coers and the marquee was donated by Vertus Laird in 1979. The decision to build the Fellowship and Family Life Center was made in 1987 with construction completed in 1991. Throughout its history, the members of Mt. Pisgah have worked together in Christian unity by giving time, money and talent to provide us with the beautiful church building we enjoy today.
We have grown from those original ten members to over 390 members with a record worship attendance of 425 on Easter of the year 2000. Likewise our budget has grown from $24.00 a year for a quarter time minister in the 1840's to a combined annual budget over $115,000.00 in 1995. In our history we have received more than 1,000 persons by baptism or letter and ordained five members into the ministry. Surely, the Lord has blessed us abundantly! We pray God's hand will continue to guide us into the 21st century.
There is now a committee formed to look at obtaining bids to build another sanctuary next to the existing to allow further growth. We are hopeful that ground will be broken yet this year. (2006)
Well a dream is coming true. A new, bigger sanctuary is being built at this time. The new building will be constructed East of the current sanctuary and will almost double seating capacity. What a great problem to have. The old sanctuary will remain for use as a chapel.
