The Waterbury Rotary Club was organized in February 1917 and was the second Rotary Club in Connecticut. At that time, it was the only service club in Waterbury. A Rotarian from Worcester, Massachusetts, George Greene came to Waterbury as manager of the National Cash Register office. He had been a member of the Worcester Club and was well versed in the history and organization of Rotary. Early in 1917, Greene got a group together and made up a list of prospective members. A dinner was arranged at Hodson's Café on West Main Street to which prospective members were invited. At this meeting, it was decided to form a club, to be sponsored by the Hartford Club - The only Rotary Club in the state. At a second meeting, a list of charter members who qualified was drawn up. A tentative organization was formed and a nominating committee was appointed.
