Our Mission:

In an effort to preserve Roxbury's heritage and landscape, the Land Trust focuses on the following:

Conserving Open Space
The Land Trust maintains 32 preserves; most are open to the public. Many of the preserves are linked together, creating large tracts of unspoiled land. Today 3,675 acres are conserved as open space under the Trust's stewardship.

Preserving Roxbury's History
The Mine Hill Preserve with its quarries, roasting oven and furnace complex, and tunnel system provides one of the best examples of 19th century mining history in Northwest Connecticut. On other preserves, traces of Roxbury's past can be found in old foundations, dams and stonewalls, and the 1849 Good Hill Schoolhouse on Tophet Road.

Saving our Farms
The Campaign to Save Our Farms resulted in the permanent preservation of three historic farms, sustaining Roxbury's rural and agricultural heritage. The Land Trust maintains and leases over 450 acres of farmland and works with local farmers to provide grazing and crop production opportunities on certain preserves.

Protecting our Waterways
A key focus of the Land Trust is to protect the Shepaug River and associated tributaries. The Yale Study of the Shepaug River Preserves was completed in 2006 by Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies students.

Offering Recreational Access
Recreational opportunities abound on the preserves and the 30 miles of blazed hiking trails with various access points. Trail maps are available at the Land Trust office, Roxbury Town Hall, Minor Memorial Library and Maple Bank Farm.

Educating
The Trust organizes educational walks and hikes throughout the year, working with local groups and schools to enhance environmental awareness.
