Saint Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council 13216
History:
The origins of a Knights of Columbus council at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, Glen Carbon, Illinois go back to mid-August 2002. St. Cecilia parishioner Walter R. Jones, PGK 3599 (Edwardsville Council 1143), with the full support of St. Cecilia's pastor, Reverend Stephen J. Pohlman (Gillespie Council 2076) began efforts to bring men of the parish together to start a council. By the end of September, the drive for a St. Cecilia men's group reached and then surpassed the 30 member goal needed to form a council. The first man to sign-up to join was Eldred N. (Buck) Adamson. Support came in many ways, but the efforts of District Deputy Stephen A. Connolly (Tri-Cities Council 1098), Illinois State New Council Development Chairman, Peter Schumacher (Trenton Council 2932), General Agent Alan J. Dunstan (Troy Council 9266), Illinois State Warden James F. Michel (Edwardsville Council 1143) and Springfield Diocesan Program Consultant James C. Waghorn (Collinsville Council 1712) deserve special recognition
The first meeting of St. Cecilia Council bears a striking resemblance to the story about the birthplace of the Order in New Haven, Connecticut and its founding by a young priest, Father Michael J. McGivney. It was at 7:00 p.m., Columbus Day, October 14, 2002 in the basement of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Glen Carbon, Illinois, that thirty-one candidates and fifteen former and current members came together to form St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council 13216. Conferring the lesson of Charity upon the candidates was the Tri-Cities Council 1098 1st Degree Team from Granite City, Illinois. District Deputy Connolly presided over the meeting that evening as well as the election of Charter Council Officers. The membership selected November 22, 2002, the Feast Day of St. Cecilia as its official Charter date. This date was selected over the October 14th date to serve as a reminder to never lose sight of its primary mission of serving God and the Church.
The Council's official Charter Presentation and 1st Anniversary Banquet was held on November 22nd, 2003. Making the official Charter presentation was Charter State Deputy and Immediate Illinois Past State Deputy William Spainhour. At the conclusion of its first year the council boasted 93 members, had earned the Knights of Columbus Star Council Award and was designated by the Illinois State Council as one of its top councils for the 2002/2003 fraternal year. The early success of St. Cecilia Council was just the beginning.
