Butler Elementary is located on Brittany Drive off Rt. 202 in Chalfont, PA. The school is named after Simon Butler, who was a Justice of the Peace for this area from 1725 - 1764. Simon Butler operated a mill which was located nearby on Route 202 which is also known as Butler Pike. The land on which the school now stands was part of 450 acres that Simon Butler purchased in 1720. Construction on Butler Elementary began in 1963, with the school opening its doors for the first time in September 1964. The original building consisted of 12 classrooms, 1 special education room, 1 kindergarten room, a library, an office, a faculty room, a health room, a boiler room, a multi-purpose room, and a lobby. The school was the first public elementary school in Bucks County to be constructed on a split-level. In 1966 an addition was completed that consisted of 6 classrooms, 1 kindergarten room, a corridor, and a storage room. The new wing was located on the west side of the building, bordering the playground.
Our teachers are skillful and highly trained professionals. Approximately 75% of our faculty are certified reading teachers, curriculum supervisors, or have a master's degree. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has recognized our school for outstanding academic achievement on the PSSA test. Butler students consistently do well in regional academic events, such as the Bucks County Spelling Bee and the Bucks County Reading Olympics. Our students are friendly, hard working, courteous, and proud of their school. The faculty and staff are extremely dedicated, skillful, and committed to every child being successful.
Parents are a critical component of our school. We are fortunate to have a large number of parent volunteers giving generously of their time to the library, computer lab, and classrooms. The Parent Teacher Organization works throughout the year to support our educational programs, and also to provide activities which promote quality family time. Our parents take an active interest in their children's work and enjoy a cooperative relationship with the teachers.
Families and community organizations enjoy our campus as a neighborhood park throughout the year. Our 14 acre campus is located at the top of a hill and is surrounded by woodlands. A unique feature of our campus is Ashley's Garden. This garden uses a gazebo and fieldstone patio to serve as an outdoor classroom. Hundreds of flowers present a profusion of blooms and colors to mark every season. The school is surrounded by a variety of softball and soccer fields. The playground has an exercise course, Project Fit America, which is specially designed for children to improve general physical fitness and cardiovascular strength.
