About Us:
The purpose of the South Sound Mounted Shooters is to encourage and participate in the sport of mounted shooting and to provide a learning environment and a forum for those persons wishing to compete in the sport. We abide by the rules set forth by the governing bodies of the sport of mounted shooting. We promote family participation and the preservation of old west values, good sportsmanship and patriotism.
South Sound Mounted Shooters (SSMS) is recognized as an official Club by our National Affiliate organization, the Mounted Shooters of America (MSA) and abides by the rules and regulations set forth by MSA. It is based in Washington accepting members from anywhere. It encompasses the area surrounding Tacoma, Olympia, the State Capitol, with members from Hobart to Chehalis.
SSMS will host annual MSA recognized events and gives to the community with demonstrations at rodeos and other venues. Members also volunteer to assist other horse groups with their cause such as the Wounded Warrior Project and local therapeutic riding programs. There will be as many practices as possible put on by SSMS for members. Some riders will be prepping for competitions while others enjoy the process. The club meets monthly without riding to discuss business. There will be beginners’ clinics to accustom new horse and rider pairs to the sport.
Member equestrians practice and compete with two .45 caliber single action revolvers using blanks that are specific for the sport. Each pistol is loaded with five rounds. Riders have a pattern of ten balloons to ride through and blast the balloons. There is also a class for rifle and shotgun.
This is a very fun sport. Come join us to learn more about what we do.
