Southington Rotary Club

Mission:

To provide an environment of fellowship and development whereby individual members have an opportunity to meaningfully participate as a group to serve the needs of our local community, our country and the world.

History:

During the summer of 1948, three local businessmen followed their dream to organize the first Rotary Club of Southington for the purpose of serving the needs of the Southington community. These three pioneers were:

Dr. George Ackerman, a local dentist

Edward Krauth, a prominent businessman

Palmer Sornberger, superintendent of the Plantsville Stanley Works plant

In the preliminary work to establish the Southington club, Palmer Sornberger's experience as a past president of the New Britain Rotary Club was invaluable. Through recruitment efforts, twenty-three charter members agreed to join this worthy endeavor. With the assistance of several New Britain Rotarians, a charter application was filed and approved by Rotary International on November 19, 1948.

Dr. George Ackerman agreed to serve as the club's first President. It was through his outstanding leadership and the charter members' personal commitment that the Southington Rotary Club was established. As a tribute to his leadership, Dr. Ackerman was reelected as Club President on July 1, 1973 to lead the club into the next quarter century.
