Our Mission
The mission of the Community Foundation of Greater Winter Haven is to make giving easy by managing endowed funds and other gifts, and to insure that the funds are used to solve community problems and improve the lives of people in the greater Winter Haven area.
About Community Foundations
What they are: Community foundations are tax-exempt public charities that encourage philanthropy by administering endowed funds primarily for local purposes. They serve a vital role as enablers of good works, by encouraging individuals and companies to fund local programs and services that solve community problems and improve the lives of people in their particular area. Community foundations can also support nonprofit organizations and their good works throughout the world.
What they do: Community foundations manage and administer permanent endowment funds which are established by individuals, families, businesses and organizations for charitable purposes. They offer attractive tax benefits to donors who place their funds with the organization, along with professional guidance and assistance in structuring long-term philanthropy with maximum cost-effectiveness. Fund donors receive valuable stewardship services such as professional investment of funds, fund distribution and grant-making to designated charities, and record keeping and reporting required by IRS.
How they are governed: All community foundations are governed by a volunteer board of leading citizens who care about and know the needs in their community.
Why choose a community foundation? There are many reasons to invest in a community foundation. Beyond supporting worthwhile charities, they identify emerging community issues and direct resources to address important needs. Community foundations have become significant tools for economic and community development, which is why they have become the fastest growing organizations in the field of philanthropy. There are about 630 community foundations in the United States today, with combined assets of over $30 billion and annual fund distributions of $300 million. Nearly every major city now boasts its own community foundation.
