The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department never operated a steam pumper. Steam pumpers were very popular between 1880 and 1925. in fact, the New York City Fire Department operated at least one such pumper till 1933. Rural nature of the District precluded the purchase of such high-powered equipment during the early days. So, we moved directly from hand operation to gasoline power.
Company No. 1 has been quartered in three firehouses. The first was located on Plandome Road right next door to the old St. Mary’s Church, which has since moved to Northern Blvd. We moved to our second house on Bayview Avenue in 1925. That building still stands and is operated by American Legion Post. In 1951, Company No. 1 moved to its current quarters, right next door. Company No. 1 was founded in 1912 when the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department came into existence. Most of the members of the old Hill & Valley Fire Department residing in the vicinity were assigned to Company No. 1, which was then called Section 1 of the Department.
Company 2 began serving the community of Manhasset in 1904 with the organization of the Hill and Valley Fire Department. In 1912, this unit became Section No. 2 of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, located on Valley Road, today Community Drive. Its equipment consisted of a hose reel, boots, helmets, raincoats, axes, and other fire apparatus pertinent to the era.
The original firehouse served Company No. 3 until 1929 when a new firehouse was constructed on the same property. It was enlarged and remodeled in 1955 to its present status. Now, due to the increased size of forth coming fire apparatus there is a need for larger quarters. it has been determined by the Commissioners and the members of the company that the current firehouse is to be demolished. A new fire house was constructed on the previous site. Our members were sad to see the old firehouse go, but understood the need for progress. In 1989, a brand new state-of-the-art three bay firehouse was constructed at Company 3's existing grounds. Today this firehouse houses Engines 8735 and 8733, Heavy Rescue 8730, Ambulance 8769, and First Response Vehicle 8799.
The fourth company of M-LFD was first organized in 1912 as Section Four of the original Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department. Section Four was housed in an annex belonging to the Red Lion Inn. According to local lore the Red Lion Inn was visited by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Sometime around 1919 the Section was disbanded.
Company No. 5 was born from a need to have fire and life protection in an area that had neither firehouse nor fire engine in the immediate vicinity thus creating a fire and life hazard for the community.
Company 5 now houses Engines 8758 and 8755, as well as Engine/Rescue 8757.In 1962, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department elected Robert Terry, Chief of Department. He served his two years with distinction. Thereafter, the Company had two more members become Chiefs of Department, namely, Julius (Sonny) Greico and Walter J. Salowski. From 1989 to 1991, Company 5's Joe Gieman served the position of Chief of Department, and from 1999 to 2001 Louis Scida held the positon of Chief of the Department.
