About Us :
The central Maine community of Dexter is situated in a small valley along Route 7 that runs north from the intersection of Route 95 in Newport and continues toward the Dover-Foxcroft and Moosehead Lake Region. It was incorporated in 1816 and Maine becomes the 23rd state in 1820.
The Town has a population of approximately 5,000+/- year round residents and is conveniently located; transit time to either Bangor or Waterville in a little less than an hour, or you can be in Portland in about 2 hours.
The community is centered around the 1,170 acre Lake Wassookeag, which provides the primary water source for the Town's water system as well as a variety of recreational opportunities. The lake level of Wassookeag is 433 feet above mean sea level, the highest elevation in town (from looking at the USGS topo map) is about 810' --located off of the Pleasant Ridge Road in northern Dexter. The village elevation drops from the dam very slowly down to Fayscott Bog -- most of the buildings are 400' and above.
The Town also has a great nine-hole municipal golf course and driving range, a public beach and picnic areas, plus boasts one of Maine's best small municipal regional airport's which offers 3,000 feet of lighted paved runway. Additionally, snowmobiling, fishing, water sports, and hunting are all popular recreational activities associated with the area. Dexter also has many clubs and organizations that are very active in the community. The immediate area has ample housing available, providing offerings in both the rural and urban environment.
