The Town covers 28.1 square miles in Oneida County and includes the Villages of Whitesboro, Oriskany, Yorkville and part of New York Mills. The New York State Thruway passes through the Town east-west along with New York State Route 69. The Barge Canal passes close by. Conrail provides rail service. The Oneida County Airport is currently located within the Town. The population, according to the 2000 US Census, is 18,635.
The Town is primarily residential in nature with the residents commuting to work in the Villages and in the nearby Cities of Utica and Rome. Utilities include Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, a National Grid Corporation, for electricity and natural gas as well as Verizon for telephone service. Cable television service is provided by Adelphia Communications. The Town provides Water Districts, Sewer Districts, Fire Districts and Lighting Districts. Fire protection is provided by the four Village Fire Departments. Police protection includes the four Village Police Departments, the Town Police Department, the County Sheriff and the New York State Police. Banking facilities located within the Town boundaries include Bank of America, HSBC, Partner's Trust, Citizens Bank, NBT and Adirondack Bank as well as several credit unions. Recreational facilities within the Town include the Whitestown Community Center, Ice Arena, Town Park, Town Playgrounds, Village Playgrounds, and Village Parks. Whitestown has five privately owned public golf courses. We also are home to the Utica Curling Club.
Public educational facilities are provided primarily by the Whitesboro School District including a high school, junior high school and seven elementary buildings. Smaller sections of the Town are served by the Oriskany Central School District, Westmoreland Central School District, and the New York Mills Union Free School District. Higher educational opportunities are available through Mohawk Community College, Utica College (a division of Syracuse University), SUNY Institute of Technology of Utica/Rome, and Hamilton College. Library facilities are provided within the Town through the Dunham Public Library.
