Washington School was opened for educational use on September 1, 1903. Actual construction of the new, modern grammar school was begun in the summer of 1902 at a total cost to taxpayers of $53,000. It is the oldest school in the Prescott Unified School District, and the oldest continuously used school in Yavapai County.
Washington School stands not only as a solid reminder of Prescott's colorful history, but a brdige between the time honored traditions of the educational past and the promises of the future. In the same field of view are old staircases that creak under the feet of students on their way to use high tech computers. The mix of past, present, and future is one that we treasure at Washington School, "The Home of the Patriots."
