The Howard County Vietnam Veterans Organization was established in 1981 for the purpose of raising funds for a court house memorial to Veterans from Howard County who lost their lives in the Vietnam war. The funds were raised, the memorial was built and we decided to have a hog roast for Vietnam Vets, thus the REUNION event was born. Twenty two years later we are over 1,000 members strong and growing. The reunion now attracts about 30,000 veterans, family and patriotic individuals each year. We have purchased our own land for all veterans to call home if they wish.
HCVVO is involved in all Vietnam Veterans issues. We have an active program for the VA patients at the VA Hospital in Marion, Indiana, including cookouts, bowling, bingo and a Christmas party. Although we must never forget the POW/MIAs that our country left behind and must to continue to work toward their return or for closure for their families, we must also remember our veterans in the VA Hospital program. They also need our undaunted support.
The Howard County Vietnam Veterans Organization is open for membership to all who are interested and who agree with granted membership to abide by the organization's by-laws (regardless of the era of service or whether or not a veteran of a war). This organization is the largest grass roots Vietnam Veterans Organization in the United States and was the only grass roots organization to lay a wreath at the dedication of the Wall.
HCVVO has many distinguished members including Sammy L. Davis, CMH and the Reverend John Steer.
