Team physician to the Los Angeles Chargers A former collegiate soccer player and professional snowboarder, Dr. Ray understands the needs of athletes. Whether you are a weekend warrior, professional athlete, youth sports player, or an active senior, Dr. Ray has come to Hoag Sports Medicine with extensive knowledge and experience to help his patients achieve their goals. Dr. Ray brings great passion and optimism to his role as a sports medicine physician with a focus on optimizing his patients’ happiness and supporting all the activities that bring them joy. His favorite part of his job is the fusion of rigorous academic understanding and human connection, truly understanding how the body works and how he can fix a problem to provide the most benefit to the person as a whole. As Dr. Ray states, “This is a very exciting time to be a sports medicine physician. My goal is to help people be active and functional. I guide my patients through cutting edge and minimally invasive treatment options to help avoid unnecessary surgery. But when surgery is required, we will partner with the best surgeons skilled in joint preservation techniques. This field is rapidly changing and I bring my patients the latest advancements and treatments in my practice.” Dr. Ray completed his undergraduate years at Occidental College, attended Stanford University School of Medicine for medical school, and completed his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Following residency, Dr. Ray chose to complete a fellowship in musculoskeletal ultrasound medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine followed by his sports medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. He served as the head team physician, overseeing Intercollegiate athletic sports medicine at UC Davis, in charge of the health and performance of over 700 Division 1 athletes and has also treated multiple US Olympic medalists, and athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLS and MLB. He has interest in advanced regenerative medicine techniques such as the use of orthobiologics, platelet rich plasma (PRP), stem cells, and prolotherapy. He also has deep clinical interests and expertise in sports related concussions, cardiac screening in athletes, and relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Dr. Ray is also a nationally renowned expert on diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and on minimally invasive ultrasound guided techniques, such as percutaneous tenotomies, perineural hydrolysis, and fascial plane hydrodissections. During his time away from the office, Dr. Ray enjoys spending time with his wife and four young children. He maintains a very active lifestyle and participates in all types of sports.
