Kurt Weill’s Street Scene

Frank Maurrant's 6th story Lower East Side apartment is the scene for a man being pushed to the edge.  Rumors about his wife having an affair have become too loud and too persistent for him to ignore. To make matters worse, that other guy keeps turning up and talking to his wife in full view of everyone. When Frank returns home to find the curtains drawn mid-morning, he knows exactly what is going on. In a fit of fury and emotion, Frank carries out his threat and kills them both.

This piece by Kurt Weill features a large, mostly male cast and combines the grim realities of racism, poverty, domestic violence and murder.

This features an ensemble cast of working-class people, striving to make their way in America. This “Broadway opera” draws on blues, jazz, spirituals, and even Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes, in a production by Houston Grand Opera, staged in Germany, 1995.
