Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama - Art House #1

Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama explores the artistic journey of B.C. born photographer Tamio Wakayama, who, after being interned during WWII, faced his racialized identity by joining the Student NonViolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the 1960s American civil rights movement. He mastered dark room photography and gained courage to address his family's experiences with racism. In Vancouver, he documented the disappearing experiences of the Japanese Canadian community. Featuring nine artists, activists, and friends, the documentary highlights Wakayama's legacy and connects his work to Vancouver's early art activism and its links to the civil rights movement, shaping Asian Canadian identity politics.

In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, millions of Vietnamese immigrants fled their beloved country to rebuild their lives all over the world. Nearly fifty years later, hundreds of children of these refugees have permanently returned to the motherland out of a curiosity and desire to experience the current country that their parents still mourn.

It's your chance to personally convey your appreciation to the ultra-talented DisOrient 2025 filmmakers for the special way that they give life to our experiences and voices. Get photos with your favorite filmmakers. You've also got time to get answers to your final film questions before we announce the festival award nominees and winners of DisOrient 2025. Categories are Best Animation, Best Short Doc, Best Short Narrative, Best Feature Doc, Best Feature Narrative, and the Jason D. Mak Award for Social Justice.
