A new play by Susan Lumenello

A WatermelonAlligator production

Sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll … and Gloria! The true-life rollicking adventures of the former model and party girl who brought 16 magazine’s teen idols and fantasies to millions-for 50 cents an issue. “Miss Stavers” nurtured young America’s dreams of their fave raves-from Elvis and The Beatles to The Monkees and beyond-while making the unlikely climb from clerk to boss and falling for a star … just like one of her readers. Dreamsville is the voyage of this unheralded pop pioneer.

”I love behind-the-scenes stories-and Gloria Stavers’ is an amazing one,” says playwright Susan Lumenello. “Her journey is about obsession, desire, and identity-and what happens when they clash. She took a one-off Elvis magazine and grew it into 16, dominating pop culture in the classic rock era. The woman should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.” Director Jess Wilson adds, “One of our guiding vision statements reads, ‘Provocative theatre. Contemporary playwrights. New works. Local talent.’ This production encompasses all of that! We are thrilled to be producing the world premiere of ‘Dreamsville’ and to have this chance to breathe life into the compelling story of the unsung visionary of rock ‘n’ roll journalism.”

This piece is intended for mature audiences. The play contains adult themes including sex work, smoking, and substance use/abuse. Audience discretion is advised.
