Michigan is known not just for its natural beauty but the ingenuity of its residents. The state has had a long history of innovation including manufacturing, agriculture, and architecture. The artworks in this exhibition are created by Michigan artists and depict buildings across the region. While some of the artists in this exhibition experienced the structures they depicted in person, others worked from memory or existing imagery like photographs. Whatever the source may be, these artworks highlight the power that buildings have to not only shape the physical landscape but also the landscape of our collective and individual memories.

The works on paper in this exhibition feature buildings that are still standing, structures that no longer exist, and some that even feature the same location decades apart. These artworks, as well as the buildings, become a visual record for future generations and show us not only where we have been but where we may be going. They document important histories of innovation, labor, and the environment of everyday life in Michigan.
