John Nyquist
While some folks play air guitar I often find myself air sketching. My wife jokingly tells me to keep both hands on the wheel but I always have my right index finger extended, sketching in the air the designs I see in nature as we drive along. Eventually, I unload those imaginary sketches and get them on paper. My preference is watercolor paper.

I grew up surrounded by the beauty and inspiration of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Drawing came naturally and at a young age I could draw detailed representations of most anything around me. My degrees are from the University of Michigan, a BFA in watercolor and graphic art and then an MS in medical and biological illustration. Most of my professional career was at the University at Buffalo as a board certified medical illustrator. Every now and then I would escape to beautiful places in the world and paint my heart out, often studying with other painters whose work I admired. I always looked forward to when I could spend all my time doing this.

Now is that time. Whereas my drawings and illustrations are painstakingly detailed my paintings lean towards impressionism and self expression. Watercolor can do so many things but I think it works best when it’s used to simply show a glimpse of reality, along with some fun, and that’s what I hope I accomplish in my watercolor landscapes. Now that I am retired from UB and living here in the Finger Lakes, in the Village of Burdett, my head is overflowing with air-sketched landscapes that I am anxious to get on paper.

Pam Viggiani
Pamela Viggiani is a mixed-media artist and art educator living in Canandaigua, NY. A native of the Finger Lakes region, Pamela received a BS and MS from Nazareth College of Rochester. Pamela began teaching art in 1986, and although now retired, she continues to foster enthusiasm and creativity in her students through her local after school art programs for children.
In a converted fruit cellar, Pamela produces abstract visual interpretations of ideas and concepts to explore relationships between words and meanings. Pamela’s small works are often manifestations of ambiguity, allowing for varied reactions to each piece of artwork. Some works, however, reflect the world back to the viewer with more clarity, revealing hidden realities and challenging entrenched ways of thinking. With each piece, the objective is to create a profound visual statement within the scope of a small two-dimensional surface.

Pamela’s art has been featured in “Small Works”, “Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery”, “Another Chicago Magazine”, “Press Pause Press”, “From Whispers to Roars”, “Sunspot Literary Journal”, “Beyond Words Literary Magazine”, and “Wild Roof Journal”. Her works can be seen in member exhibitions at Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Mill Art Center and Gallery, and Arts Center of Yates County. In 2023, Pamela had her first solo exhibition in The Stairwell Gallery at Main Street Arts. Most recently, her work, “Don’t Look Up”, won the 2024 Geminga contest from “Sunspot Literary Journal”.

Toni Johnson
I am an emerging artist who began making art after retirement. I was born in Penn Yan, New York in 1961. As a retired French teacher, I have traveled extensively and have been exposed to artwork around the world. This exposure, along with a strong desire to create, were the driving forces behind my development as an artist.

I do not have a degree in art, but have taken many classes, both in person and online. I took watercolor lessons from Bill Wilsey. My acrylic painting has been influenced by working with Grant Lounsbury, Nicholas Wilton, and Elizabeth St. Hilaire. I have also studied under Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT). Most of my painting has been representational, but I have done some work with abstracts. In the past year, I have realized that mixed media is where I find true joy in creating art. Mixed media allows me to experiment with a multitude of materials, which in turn forces me to think more creatively and to rely more on my imagination. My work in mixed media has been influenced by Laly Mille, Dawn Vander Stoep, and instructors at Golden Paints. Taking techniques and ideas that I have learned from all of these instructors has helped me to develop my own mixed media style.

I am a member of the local Arts Center of Yates County and the Penn Yan Art Guild. I have exhibited in local art galleries, both in open shows and juried shows.

I currently live just outside of Penn Yan, NY, which is in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.
