Featuring the extraordinary work of local emerging artist, Njeri Kinuthia, the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens is excited to present Je, Niko Huru? Threads of Freedom: Njeri Kinuthia. The title phrase in Swahili “Je, Niko Huru?” translates to “Am I Free?” Through self-portraiture Kinuthia explores her coming-of-age experiences in Kenya, challenging the relationship between cultural traditions and personal freedom, inviting viewers to reflect upon and question these themes.
Utilizing a variety of mediums—including pastels, charcoal, paint, beads, and embroidery—Kinuthia’s distinctive style incorporates vibrant textiles from Kenya as well as repurposed fabrics donated by local women’s organizations. Grounded in self-representation, her artwork challenges the social norms that restrict women in a patriarchal society by inserting herself into her works on her own terms.
* Artwork will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the museum.
