Anderson Yezerski Gallery is pleased to announce En camino, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Paul Shakespear. This is Shakespear’s eighteenth solo exhibition with the gallery since 1985.

A visit to Shakespear’s studio is a lesson in the practice of looking. These are paintings that can be appreciated at a glance, but the viewer who lingers longer will uncover their singular depth: the intricate groundwork laid just beneath their calm surfaces. My first visit to Paul’s studio was of course with Howard in 2021. As usual, I observed him observing. I quickly learned that if you let it happen, the relationship you can have with these paintings is like that friendship where neither of you need to talk to enjoy each other’s company. Sometimes it takes understanding that you don’t need to understand. Four years later (a couple weeks ago) I was standing in Paul’s studio and seeing the layers of underpainting like decades of information and feeling. For those who have had the privilege of following this work for the past 40 years like Howard, how lucky you are. For those who are just jumping into the quiet beauty of these canvases much like myself, welcome.
