First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet at the Noth Grove trailhead by the Pioneer's Cabin Tree Cookie display.

Parking: Calaveras Big Trees State Park Visitor Center lot. $10 per vehicle to enter. Accepts all free passes, including the 4th grade Adventure Pass.

What to Expect: Walk among the biggest individual trees on earth, the giant sequoias, with expert docent Doc Nancy.  If there is enough snow, we will use free snowshoes the park provides, you just provide the energy.

Length of Hike: 1.7 mile, 2 hours

Preparation: Check the forecast ahead of time to determine weather. Feel free to call the Interpretive Office at 209-795-9780 the day before to determine if it will be a snowshoe hike. Please wear grippy, water-resistant or waterproof shoes, water bottle, and layers as needed for the weather.

Special Instructions: Snowshoes will only be available when needed and can only be used during the guided hike. There will be a demo for those unfamiliar with the shoes. They are not for sale or for rent outside of the hike.
