First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet at the Kirkwood Entrance on Skyline Blv/SR-35, by the big welcoming map near the kiosk.

Parking: Parking is $10 per vehicle in the lot. May pay using credit/debit card in the automatic payment machines or via cash or card at the kiosk.

What to Expect: This moderate 5.15 mile loop has 1,190 feet elevation gain and amazing views. From the top of Castle Rock Falls, on along a rocky trail with views of the San Lorenzo Valley and Pacific. After lunch we'll pass Goat Rock and its breathtaking vista.

Length of Hike: 5.2 mile, 5 hours

Preparation: Trail is rugged, rocky and steep at certain points and may be wet and soft at the time of the hike. Closed-toed hiking boots or athletic shoes are strongly recommended. Bring at least one liter of water, lunch, snacks, and appropriate clothing.  

Special Instructions: Rain and/or strong wind will cancel hike.  

Ages: Recommended for strong hikers age 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
