First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet at the China Camp State Park Ranger Station which is located at 101 Peacock Gap Trail in China Camp State Park.

Parking: Please park at the ranger station parking lot.

What to Expect: This will be a brisk early-morning hike to a vista point to watch the sunrise. There will be a 450 elevation gain. Please bring a headlamp and dress in warm layers.  

Length of Hike: 3.5 mile, 3 hours

Preparation: Please dress in appropriate hiking shoes and wear warm layers. Please bring a headlamp and bottled water.

Special Instructions: Rain cancels hike. This is an early-morning hike that will begin in the dark. Bring a headlamp.  

Ages: 12 years old and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
