First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Participants will meet at the Avery's Pond Trailhead, with parking in the main lot past the Horse Assembly area within the park entrance.

Parking: Parking in this lot has a fee of $12 with cash or card. Cash payments will require exact change for self-registration and a card can be used by scanning the LAZgo signage within the park entrance. Poppy, Explorer, and Library passes are recommended.

What to Expect: This trail hike will cover some rocky ground and will feature minor changes in elevation. Those with some hiking experience and ability are recommended, but available to new hikers willing for a small challenge. This trail is not paved or ADA accessible.

Length of Hike: 2.5 mile, 3 hours

Preparation: Be sure to wear close-toed shoes and layers as the temperature may change as the morning goes on. Water is be a must and will not be available at the trailhead. Restrooms will be accessible at the beginning and end of the hike. Binoculars and cameras are strongly encouraged!

Special Instructions: The hike requires an RSVP, so please fill out the form and let us know how many people you intend to bring! This hike will happen rain or shine, but we will monitor the weather and send updates if severe storms or lightning are predicted. We will be going out shy of extreme weather, so be brave and get out with us! Check the email you RSVP'd with the night before the program and right before leaving to meet the group the morning of the hike if rainstorms develop around the new year.
