First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet at the Covered Wagon Tours parking lot off Washington Street, 4 miles north of Interstate 10.

Parking: Parking is free.

What to Expect: Discover naturally occurring California Fan Palm groves in this otherworldly ecosystem. Enjoy a peaceful desert escape that is surprisingly close to the city. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions on this casual hike.

Length of Hike: 4.0 mile, 3 hours

Preparation: Dress in layers, January in the desert can be unpredictable. Bring good hiking shoes, water, and snacks. Please arrive early to prepare.

Special Instructions: Dogs are not allowed in the Preserve.  

Ages: 12 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
