First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.
Location: The Palm Springs Tramway is the only way to reach the Long Valley Ranger Station. Ticket for the tram can be purchased online at https://pstramway.com, or as a walk-up. Tram tickets range from $21 to $35 depending on age. Cars depart every 12-20 minutes, subject to change per PS Tram. Once at the Mountain Station (top of the tramway), meet at the Long Valley Ranger Station.
Parking: Parking at the base of the tramway is $15, or free for residents of Coachella Valley.
What to Expect:
Easy hike, 2 options: From Long Valley, short easy hike to Notch #5 (0.8 mile). Can continue on a more moderately strenuous extended hike to Notch #1 (2 miles). Both hikes return to the Mountain Station where the tram can take you back down the mountain
Length of Hike: 2.0 mile, 2 hours
Preparation: Please wear layers for cold weather and closed-toe shoes with good traction. There will be snow or ice present. Bring ample water, snack, sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat). This event is at 8500ft so weather can change suddenly.
Special Instructions: Severe weather on the mountain will cancel hike.
Ages: Ages 6+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
