The Westchester Music of India will celebrate its 10th anniversary with Mehfil-e-Ghazal -a program of choice Ghazals from the great masters of the genre. Ghazal is a genre of romantic love poetry that has been set to classical Indian music for musical and poetic presentations at cultural gatherings of like-minded intellectuals and poets. This form of poetry is a very rich piece of our cultural inheritance collected across centuries. It traces its origins to 7th-century Arabic poetry. It spread into the Indian subcontinent in the 12th century due to the influence of Sufi mystics and the courts of Hindu and Islamic kings. Sufi poetry and Ghazals often overlap. It is now most prominently a form of poetry of many languages of South Asia and Turkey. Today it is an ongoing trend and continues without a slow down with new and renowned singers singing Ghazals as a rite of passage.
We will present these traditional classics with a East-West creative twist of 15 member chorus singers and soloists. They will be supported by a full 25 member live orchestra in a fusion of Western and classical Indian instruments, including some rare ones such a Sarangi and Sitar.
