12:30pm Between the Stone and the Flower = Regal Hollywood 11

Genie Milgrom spent decades searching for her Jewish heritage. Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Miami Genie was schooled from grade school through college in the Roman Catholic religion. She had a deep-rooted feeling of not belonging to the Spanish Catholic environment she grew up in. Resulting from her research, Genie becomes firmly convinced that centuries before, her family was Jewish from the Iberian Peninsula. When she decides to convert to Orthodox Judaism, it causes a major shift in her family. With her husband, an Ashkenazi Jew with Romanian origins, Genie reaches the truth about her family and its history.

The Glory of Life profiles the last year in Franz Kafka’s life and its surprising love story. The power of love makes this the happiest time of his life. Kafka suffers from tuberculosis and is dependent on his overbearing family. In July 1923, Franz Kafka is convalescing on the Baltic Sea coast when he meets Dora Diamant and falls in love. Franz’s health deteriorates rapidly, they travel to a sanatorium in Austria. Set over the last year of Kafka’s life, the tale of Franz and Dora’s fragile time together in Germany juxtaposes the excitement and vitality of Weimar Berlin with Kafka’s indecision and failing health. Mediated through letters, telegraphs, and the telephone, Michael Kumpfmüller captures the exhilaration of modernity, and the essence of a friendship nourished by communication.

Aumari, a young Eritrean refugee who lives in Israel, is caught by the immigration police, and deported. While in the airport, he manages to escape at the last minute and runs straight into the hands of Maccabi Netanya’s football fans. He is mistaken for the new Nigerian striker soccer player who was enroute to Israel to help save the struggling team. With no prior soccer experience, Aumari plays along and somehow manages to reinvigorate the floundering soccer club. His survival depends on the success of the team. When his ruse is discovered, and he is forced to become a refugee again, will someone stand by his side, and will he manage, for the first time in his life, to stop running?

An engaged interfaith couple are about to have their parents meet for the first time over a Shabbat dinner when an accidental death gets in the way. Two couples, Abby & Benjamin, and David and his currently converting to Judaism fiancé Meg arrive at Abby and David’s family home for a special Shabbot dinner. David’s Jewish parents will be meeting Meg’s Catholic, Midwestern parents for the first time. An accidental death threatens to unravel the evening. During this atypical Shabbot dinner, things take a turn for the worse. While trying to conceal a dead body in the bathroom deep-rooted traditions are creatively exploited as new ones are created. Kyra Sedgwick stars.

Compared to an Israeli version of Top Gun, a rivalry between two charismatic Israeli fighter pilots reaches breaking point on the eve of the 1967 six-day war. After single handedly shooting down six Egyptian Migs in aerial combat, a young, brash lieutenant is rewarded by being assigned to take over command of a fighter squadron. The methodical and more disciplined squad’s second in command, clashes with the new leader and his inexperience and domineering ways. The ongoing power struggle between the two leaders is affecting the performance and conduct of the squadron. As their country’s existence hangs by a thread, the two men must learn to work together, uniting their squadron. It is only then that they are ready to lead their soldiers to victory.

As a family from India moves into a desert neighborhood in Southern Israel in the 1960’s, the family’s eldest, beautiful daughter discovers friendship with the lovely local French girl as they explore the trials and tribulations of growing into womanhood. The film also explores the hardships and surprises that come with the integration of multiple families from different ethnic backgrounds and their struggle with immigration and prejudice and how they learn not only to exist in the same space, but to thrive.
