BERNICE STEINBAUM GALLERY presents: Aurora Molina, unveils the psychological depth of generations and old traditions of needle art that have often been defined as low art. “DECORATIVE” is a humane quality in art, not evil, a solo exhibition featuring an installation-based project by Aurora Molina, opening Saturday, May 10th, 4 - 8 pm.
Aurora Molina is an artist, teacher, and cultural organizer whose work catalyzed the advent of The South Floridian fiber art scene. Drawing inspiration from things as disparate as Le Musée de L’Orangerie and Faith Ringgold, Molina hopes to break with the mold of a white cube exhibition with floor-to-ceiling wool wet felted wallpapers made from layers and layers of colored wool, intuitively compiled to create an abstract painterly waves and bathe the viewer in warmth, texture, and color. This wallpaper will be coupled by her new body of wool portraits. The focus of this new body of work is on art making itself, in this case, a wild, free-form, intricate take on dry felting, “painting” with thick layers of wool to create portraits in her emblematic, caricature-like style, and featuring several characters she has encountered throughout her life.
