Join us for a concert of rarely heard eighteenth-century vocal music from Amsterdam’s Portuguese synagogue. The performance will include the New York premiere of excerpts from the Hebrew-language oratorio Esther (1774) by Cristiano Giuseppe Lidarti, plus selections from a cantata by Abraham de Caçeres. Featuring a period instrument ensemble using performance techniques from Rembrandt's Amsterdam and beyond, this concert brings to life the sonic world of the eighteenth century. The performances will be interspersed with commentary from the curator and organizer, providing engaging context for the audience.

About the organizer:

Jonathan Salamon is a harpsichordist, pianist, and scholar with a passion for music of the Baroque and Classical periods. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and presented scholarship at conferences including the American Bach Society and the Society for Music Analysis (UK). A former Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands, Jonathan has performed and written about the eighteenth-century music from Amsterdam’s Sephardic synagogue. He received his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Harpsichord Performance from the Yale School of Music. He is currently pursuing a PhD in music history at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar.
