ABOUT THE SHOW: Inspired by the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, the musical merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. One of the most acclaimed productions of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter, Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical tells of the days leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, Georges Seurat is struggling to make meaningful art and maintain a relationship with his lover, Dot. Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat's artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat's descendant – named George and also an artist – finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past.

As with all Norton Singers productions, the focus of this show is on the voices and the music, and this production will feature an ensemble of almost thirty strong singers, accompanied by a full orchestra, to bring to life this challenging and heartbreaking work about our need to connect to the past, present and future. This year's production will be directed by Maryann Zschau, with music direction by Steven Bergman. Well-established in the Boston theater scene, this is their first time overseeing a Norton Singers production. Robert Orzalli will play the lead role of Georges Seurat, with Jennifer Glick playing Dot, his mistress and the woman who suffers most from his passion for perfection. Also featured in the ensemble cast are Rachel Fisher-Parkman as Marie, Athan Mantalos as Jules, Sara Seales as Yvonne, and Maren Phifer as Louise.

The show is produced with permission from Music Theater International and made possible in part through a grant from the Norton Cultural Council.
